Our tagline this year is Read, Dream and Celebrate en dos idiomas. How do you think your books and stories help us accomplish this?

I think stories really open up our imagination and our hearts, they help us understand foreign perspectives, and they dare us to dream big impossible dreams. I know for sure whenever I write something, I am trying to celebrate something I love, to offer it up to the reader so that they can love it too. I think one way we built a better world is by finding ourselves constantly excited about the world around us, by seeing problems as opportunities and everyday things as magical.

What are some of the things you do to bring to life the world you’ve imagined?

I love making art and writing books because they are really just a way to communicate big ideas. I believe representation matters, that when people that look like you are shown in a positive light, you learn to cast yourself in those big positive roles. I think when we put that kind of beauty out there, it can mean a lot to a lot of people. It can heal something inside of them when they see something they were maybe told to be ashamed of as something worthy of love, the very subject of a work of art.

What stories inspired you as a young reader? / ¿Cuáles historias te inspiraron cuando eras niño/a?

I grew up in a small town, so a lot of the stories that inspired me when I was younger were the ones that my family and family friends would tell me. I always loved a good ghost story or the story of how someone arrived in town or how they learned to ride bikes. I’ve always been fascinated by the way people retell their lives, it tells you a great deal about them, and it makes you feel close to them, connected. Reading-wise, I think my first favorite book was a Children’s Illustrated Encyclopedia. It really opened my eyes to a world outside of my world. And then, I read Harry Potter, and that really opened my mind to a reality outside of reality.

If your book was turned into a movie/series, who would you cast? / Si tu libro fuera adaptado al cine, ¿Cuáles actores elegirías para interpretar a tus personajes?

I think I would love it to be turned into an animated short. I think I would cast Salma Hayek as the narrator. I love her voice, and I love that she is from Veracruz, too.

"I love making art and writing books because they are really just a way to communicate big ideas. I believe representation matters, that when people that look like you are shown in a positive light, you learn to cast yourself in those big positive roles."

What advice would you give to young writers?

Stop writing the book you think publishers want and write the book that you want to write - the one that speaks to you, that you’re passionate about. I think a lot of the time, when we go into creative professions, we try to build a roadmap out of the success of others, but there is no roadmap. What worked for someone might not work for you, so just create things that make you excited. Everyone has their own unique voice and experiences, it’ll make your work stand out, and it’ll make working on your craft much more enjoyable!

How did you feel the first time your work was published? How was your publishing journey?

The first time I saw a cover I illustrated on a bookshelf, I felt just so grateful and so proud of myself. It was a crazy experience because I grew up looking up to artwork in books and feeling so deeply inspired, so it felt amazing to be able to give that back. This might be TMI, but I honestly tear up whenever I think out there there’s a little girl just like me who’s looking at my work, and it makes her want to draw or write something. It felt like a true full-circle moment. Sometimes I get emails from parents showing me their kid's drawings of the covers I’ve illustrated, and it always gets me because I was that girl tracing textbooks illustrations and re-drawing things I liked—I cry every time, like, how can you not?

What are some challenges you encounter when writing?

I was born and raised in Mexico. I’ve always had a knack for languages, but other than school’s English classes, I never took private English classes, and in a weird way, a lot of my English is semi self-taught (thanks, MTV!). I always feel a bit insecure about writing in English (it doesn’t seem like it! Because I write and talk like there’s no tomorrow, but I probably have to look up words for this blog questionnaire at least 50 times) because every now and again I’ll make one of those mistakes that just make me seem really dumb. But, I don’t really let it stop me, I think what would be really dumb of me would be to stop myself from doing something that I love just because I’m afraid I’ll be embarrassed.

What was your experience like getting your book translated into Spanish or English?

Magic is fully in English with some Spanish words and a glossary. The only book that I've worked on (as an illustrator) that was been translated is Small Room, Big Dreams by Monica Brown, and my favorite part about it is that my friends and family who don’t speak English can read it!

How do you think libraries make our world a better place?

I LOVE libraries. There wasn’t (still, there isn’t) a library where I grew up, so I really grew up looking at them in movies and tv shows and wishing I could go. My grandpa and my mom love books, and they taught me to love them too. My grandpa used to say people who write books live forever because we are so much our ideas and what we believe in. So, libraries are buildings filled with people’s ideas and beliefs, and I don’t know what can be more magical than that. Having a place where you can go and have access to all of that information, no matter who you are, that’s truly priceless.

What are you working on now? / ¿Cuáles son tus proyectos futuros? ¿En qué estás trabajando?

I’m working on my second picture book, Mariposa - a story also set in Veracruz about a little girl with a big dream and an unexpected hurdle. And I’m working, as an illustrator, on a wonderful chapter book series called The Mythics, and in a fantastic picture book written by Cynthia Levinson, Free to Learn, a book about a Supreme Court case that was a decision to allow children of undocumented immigrants attend school in the US.
