21st Century Kids: Dream Big

Mona Gilbert, Children's Librarian, Northridge Branch Library,
Young person dreaming big
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”—Eleanor Roosevelt

Having dreams, wishes, and goals are human aspirations. After all, striving to improve one's lot in life is encouraged. Our dreams and hopes bolster our emotions when times are challenging; somewhere on the horizon is a better version of ourselves and our lives. Although formulating a dream is the first step to potential achievement, it is persistence, determination, and willingness to learn and experience failure that moves you closer to the finish line. Moreover, setting your heart on a specific outcome can be tricky, as some objectives are not a good fit once realized. Finally, others can have dreams and wishes on your behalf. The Los Angeles Public library offers many books that explore the complexities and rewards of dreaming big.

"Tag Your Dreams" by Iris Deppe, excerpted from Tag Your Dreams.

Play tag
with your dreams.
Chase them
till you’re breathless.
have strong legs,
but so do you.
Keep running,
with your arm out,
fingers reaching.
Don’t let them get away.
