Created by Arthur Conan Doyle, the fictional character of Irene Adler appeared only in one Holmes story, "A Scandal in Bohemia," but was known as "the only woman to have beaten Sherlock Holmes." Douglas' first novel in the series, Good Night, Mr. Holmes, was followed by a number of novels and short stories in which Adler often worked side-by-side with Holmes.

The manuscript details an 1894 case that took Holmes and Watson to Minnesota to track a murderous arsonist known only as the Red Demon. The latest in the series is called The Magic Bullet: A Locked Room Mystery Featuring Shadwell Rafferty and Sherlock Holmes.
