After a summer of exploring, observing, and connecting with wildlife in the city of Los Angeles, a global biodiversity hotspot, the first L.A. BioBlitz Challenge concluded with outstanding results. Thank you to all the volunteers citywide who participated and supported this tremendous success.
What is the difference between an “observation cold spot” and a “biodiversity cold spot”? It is easy to confuse the terms, but they are two very different scientific issues.
A “biodiversity cold spot” is an area with a limited variety of living things, like plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria.
I took advantage of the three-day weekend to add wildlife observations for the L.A. BioBlitz Challenge at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades. It was an easy 15-minute walk from my house that bypasses the normally packed holiday parking.
There are 38 special species listed on the L.A. BioBlitz Challenge website.
Have you decided to join the L.A. BioBlitz Challenge? If you haven’t done so yet, now is the time! The challenge runs until August 7th and helps contribute to the knowledge about our city’s biodiversity.
Biodiversity is short for biological diversity. The term refers to the variety of living things on Earth, and their interactions with each other and their environments—this is extremely important to humans.
