Wes Anderson’s newest, The Phoenician Scheme (2025, rated PG-13), buzzes with his usual hyperstylized production design and quirky wit, but also boasts emotionally resonant performances from Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Willem Dafoe, and F. Murray Abraham.
The year is 1950 in the obscure Eastern European country of Phoenicia. Globetrotting industrialist and arms dealer Zsa-Zsa Korda is the target of constant assassination attempts by scheming tycoons and foreign terrorists. After surviving a sixth plane crash, Korda makes the decision to pass over his nine sons and name his estranged daughter Liesl, a Catholic novitiate preparing to take her vows, as the sole heir to his fortune and industrial empire. Rivals have conspired to undermine his business interests by raising the price of building materials; Korda must travel to meet with investors to cover his costs. And so the film launches us upon a series of misadventures as Korda, joined by Liesl and his fussy new secretary Bjorn, tries to swindle everyone into more than they agreed on, to evade the attempts on his life, and hopefully mend his relationship with his daughter along the way.
