Description:
Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Chow achieved international crossover success with his wacky mashup of martial arts and comedy in films like Kung Fu Hustle. His breakout hit, Shaolin Soccer (2001, rated PG-13) is a blast of eye-popping action and explosively zany footwork.
Fung, a soccer star, accepts a bribe from his crooked teammate Hung to lose a game, after which enraged fans beat him up and break his leg. Down on his luck and unemployed years later, he meets Sing (played by Chow), a poor Shaolin monk unsuccessfully trying to spread the gospel of kung fu. Fung convinces Sing and his misfit band of ex-Shaolin masters to form Team Shaolin, who conquer cheating teams with martial arts when more than soccer prowess is needed. Hung has become a successful businessman and fields his own steroid-enhanced team, Team Evil (of course), leading to a showdown with Team Shaolin at the finals in Shanghai. A cartoonish and hilarious take on the beautiful game.
