Description:

A visually stunning Japanese anime interpretation of Fritz Lang's classic film, Metropolis (2001, rated PG-13) integrates the style of Osamu Tezuka's seminal 1945 manga illustrations. The filmmakers are a who’s who of classic anime from Astroboy to Akira.

In the wealthy multileveled city of Metropolis, humans co-exist uneasily with robot workers, resenting them for causing their unemployment and forcing them to live in the squalid underworld. Oligarch Duke Red is finishing a massive paramilitary fortress called the Ziggurat, topped with a secret weapon with which he hopes to rule the world. It will be controlled by an advanced android girl named Tima, after his deceased daughter. A private detective and his nephew Kenichi are on the trail of the rogue scientist who is designing Tima; when they apprehend him in his lab, Kenichi and the newly activated Tima become separated from the rest and descend into the lower levels. Neither of them realize that she is an android at first, and they start to fall in love while on the run from Duke Red’s forces. A massive human uprising meets harsh resistance from the overlords and their robot army, leading to an apocalyptic showdown with the rapidly evolving Tima, who is the key to the ultimate weapon of destruction.
