Beasts of the Southern Wild (PG-13) is a heartfelt slice of magical realist filmmaking that was a breakout hit in 2012 for visionary director Benh Zeitlin as well as its six-year old star actress, Quvenzhané Wallis. Intrepid young Hushpuppy lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink hopes his tough-love parenting will help prepare her for a future when he's no longer around to protect her. When Wink falls mysteriously ill, their universe unravels. Temperatures rise and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With rising waters threatening to engulf their community, fearsome aurochs on the loose, and Wink's health fading fast, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
