Description:
It’s Christmastime in Orlando, Florida, and hapless but grandiose taxi driver Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney) has just snagged a very special fare: “His Great Red Oneness, the Claus!” Santa wants to retire, and has come to town to pass on the mantle to his chosen successor, Joe Carruthers, who used to host a children’s TV program and now runs the local Children’s Museum. But Santa’s memory is flagging, and Joe and his agent Marty turn out to be far more rude and ruthless than they seemed; Marty doesn’t believe it’s the real Santa and has him thrown in jail. Santa accidentally left his magic sack in the back seat of Ernest’s cab, and now Ernest and a runaway girl named Harmony must cook up an elaborate scheme to get Santa sprung from his cell and get present delivery back on track. Ernest Saves Christmas (1988, rated PG) is an ‘80s romp that gives Jim Varney’s rubber face and southern antics a full workout, along with his catchphrase “Know whut I mean, Vern?”
