Argelia Atilano is a very well-known radio personality in Los Angeles. She along with her husband Omar were the host of one of the most popular Spanish radio shows in Los Angeles, El Show de Omar y Argelia on K-LOVE 107.5 FM for 20 years. But as Argelia's biography indicates, she is first a proud mother and it is because of this that she was inspired to write the book Grandes Dreamers which highlights the powerful stories of 12 US Latinas. As her daughters were growing up, she noticed the lack of representation of Latina women in the US. Research shows that representation is very important for minorities because it helps shape how others view them and how they view themselves. Often minorities are not represented in books, media, etc. And when they are represented, it is sometimes done in a very negative light.

Argelia Atilano decided to do something about this issue by writing a book. Argelia collaborated with illustrator Anna Alvarado, who is a mother of three and a full-time artist. Anna’s illustrations for Grandes Dreamers are empowering.

Why did you think it was important to publish the book in both Spanish and English?

Argelia: More than important, it is essential that we create a bilingual book for many reasons. The primary reason being to honor and preserve our mother tongue. We believe that by writing bilingual books, we are giving our youth today the opportunity to maintain their linguistic richness and strengthen the cultural bond with parents and grandparents, hence forging a positive and rich image of the Latinx community. Grandes Dreamers also becomes a great learning option for all non-Spanish speakers seeking to discover the beauty and the power of being bilingual.

Anna, what was the inspiration behind the illustrations? Do you have a favorite illustration from the book?

Anna: To me, art is both powerful and universal, it reflects humanity and connects us with one another in ways words can’t convey. The more art we can create the more diverse relationships and bridges we build as well. With this book, I wanted our Latinx community to see themselves represented in a bold and vibrant way as well as to feel like they were able to connect with each of the fierce trailblazers highlighted in Grandes Dreamers. I took elements of our Latina sheroes stories, combined them with rich floral art to represent deep roots and growth, and weaved them all together with imagery of a child dreaming big. One of my favorite pieces to create was Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s story art, not only because she’s AMAZING but also because she’s my daughter’s favorite Latina leader and I added my eleven-year-old daughter into the artwork. My hope is that through my art, I will inspire others to boldly spread the love and magic with their own colorful stories and continue dreaming BIG.

“Our hope is that we’ve made each of our fierce sheroes, as well as our Latinx community proud to see ourselves boldly and vibrantly represented in the pages of Grandes Dreamers.”

The book “celebrates the life, journey, impressive careers and groundbreaking milestones of goal-driven Latina women.” How did you decide on the 12 grandes dreamers?

Argelia: This was definitely a challenge because we obviously had way more than 12 grandes dreamers on the table. Both Anna and I were on a mission to deliver a book that would make our children, especially young girls feel grateful, fortunate, and proud after reading a book that celebrates women that were too, at one point young girls like them with big dreams and aspirations. In the end, we ended up choosing 12 Latinas (11 living and 1 deceased) that were born in the United States with the hope that our girls would see themselves represented with dignity and respect through their stories that also highlight the many important fields where these women have left their legacy. We were adamant about choosing diversity also in age, making sure that the young generation is also well represented by including important figures like Laurie Hernandez and AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez).

What is the takeaway that you both want for the readers to get?

Anna: After discovering and knowing these stories, we want our readers to walk away with a sense of empowerment, pride, and truly feel inspired to shoot for the stars and land where their heart desires, just like it happened for these hard-working 12 Latinas that persevered despite the many obstacles, challenges, and adversities faced in their life. We want small and big readers, boys and girls, children and adults alike to be aware of what Justice Sonia Sotomayor once shared when reminding us about her own journey, “people who live in difficult circumstances need to know that happy endings are possible.”

Most of the 12 grandes dreamers are still alive, what do you think they will say about your book and illustrations?

We’d like to believe the featured trailblazers would be honored and touched to know that two hardworking Latina moms came together to celebrate and highlight pieces of their life stories in a beautiful and thoughtful way. We spent over three years pouring love and magic into the creation of our bilingual book. Our hope is that we’ve made each of our fierce sheroes, as well as our Latinx community proud to see ourselves boldly and vibrantly represented in the pages of Grandes Dreamers.

The final question, what are 2 of your favorite books?

Argelia: Two of my all-time favorite books are El Principito (The Little Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and now, Grandes Dreamers.

Anna: My two favorite books are The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
