Description:

Join Dr. Andrea Liss on Zoom for our next Good Trouble Reading Group. We’ll be discussing a selection of poetry from the collection Songs to a Moonstruck Lady: Women in Yiddish Poetry.

Yiddish poetry is one of the great canons of world literature, and also one in which women play a major role; unfortunately, much of it is lost to the general reading public because of the language barrier. This volume presents lovely translations of Yiddish poems by women poets and Yiddish poems about women. We will read and discuss a selection of these surprising, touching, and startlingly alive poems.

Email eden@lapl.org for the link to read the poetry selection online, and for the Zoom link to attend.

The Good Trouble Reading Group shares books that engage themes of social justice with love and family at their core. Our group leader, Dr. Andrea Liss, is Professor Emerita of Visual Culture and Cultural Theory at California State University, San Marcos, and a local Echo Park resident. Her teaching and research focus on artwork, photography, and poetry that connect deeply with historical events and their echoes today in the fight for justice.
