Description:

Drew Barrymore made her directing debut with Whip It (2009, rated PG-13), the heartfelt and high-energy story of a girl who finds acceptance with a rowdy team of roller derby girls. Indie rock-loving misfit Bliss (Ellen Page) lives in a small Texas town and yearns to break free of her mother's world of beauty pageants and conformity. She sees her chance when she meets the Hurl Scouts, a knockabout roller derby team from Austin whose members include Maggie Mayhem, Bloody Holly and Smashley Simpson. Bliss tries out for the Scouts and wins a slot (along with the nickname Babe Ruthless), but has to lie to her parents to conceal her new hobby. Bliss finds friendship, freedom, and new confidence with her teammates, but a conflict between an upcoming championship game and the Bluebonnet beauty pageant threatens to reveal her secret.

Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Alia Shawkat and Marcia Gay Harden star in this uplifting story of sisterhood and female empowerment. While not explicitly queer, this film from bisexual director Barrymore is all about chosen family and smashing gender expectations.
