Description:
What was supposed to be a simple bank robbery turns into a Dog Day Afternoon (1975, rated R) in Sidney Lumet’s classic character study. Three amateurs led by Sonny (Al Pacino) walk into the First Brooklyn Savings Bank with guns out, eager for a big haul. Unfortunately, they’ve arrived just after the daily pickup, and only $1,100 is left to steal. One of the robbers immediately loses his nerve and flees. The police surround the bank and it becomes a hostage standoff and a media circus, with Sonny and Sal (the great John Cazale) struggling to manage an unruly mix of bank staff and customers. A restive crowd gathers to watch, and Sonny wins them over by showering them with money and leading anti-police chants. Sonny and Sal want a ride to the airport, pizzas for the hostages, and a plane to fly them to freedom. Surprisingly, it comes out that Sonny was doing all this to pay for his lover Leon’s gender reassignment surgery (sensitively played by Chris Sarandon), who has been hospitalized at Bellevue after a suicide attempt. Eventually, Sonny and Sal and their hostages make their way to the airport – but they were never destined for a clean getaway.
It’s based on the true story of John Wojtowicz, who led a failed bank robbery to pay for reassignment surgery for his transgender partner Elizabeth Eden, and their story resonates even more powerfully than the tense hostage standoff.
