A teen trash summer laff riot from 1986! John Hughes may have set the tone for classic ‘80s teen cinema with The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, but for something weirder, wilder and more lowbrow, look no further than the lovelorn sick & twisted comedies of Savage Steve Holland, whose first movie Better Off Dead is still a beloved cult classic. John Cusack rejoined him to star in the followup, One Crazy Summer (1986, rated PG), in which Hoops McCann and his best friend George leave their high school graduation and head out to Nantucket for fun in the sun. Hoops dreams of going to art school for animation, and his freaky cartoons about a rhinoceros seeking love intercut the zany action. They rescue aspiring rocker Cassandra (Demi Moore) from a goofy biker gang, meet up with Egg (Bobcat Goldthwait) and a whole cast of other lovable misfits played by ‘80s comedy VIPs, who tangle with the local preppies on the island and try to beat them in the big end-of-summer sailing regatta. Sparks fly between Hoops and Cassandra, whose budding relationship is easy to root for. Juvenile jokes, ridiculous situations and enough summer madness to fill up a whole theater’s worth of popcorn tubs.
