Description:

Sean Penn stars in Gus Van Sant’s biopic as Harvey Milk, the pioneering gay rights activist who was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1977, only to be gunned down along with mayor George Moscone by fellow supervisor Dan White the following year at City Hall. Milk (2008, rated R) tells the story of Harvey, who moved from New York to San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood in 1972 and opened a camera shop. He was a popular organizer and defender of the Castro’s gay and lesbian community and won election to the board of supervisors, becoming the first openly gay elected public official in California. There he successfully sponsored a bill banning discrimination in public accommodations, housing and employment on the basis of sexual orientation. In a bizarre series of events shortly thereafter, his antagonistic fellow supervisor Dan White, a former policeman, shot and killed Milk along with mayor Moscone. Though it tragically cut short a brilliant life and career, his assassination made him a heroic martyr of the LGBTQIA rights movement, which would go on to vindicate his work nationwide.
