Description:

Battle of the Sexes (2017, rated PG-13) is a hilarious clash of pugnacious personalities trapped in the media glare, satirizing gender roles in the 1970s while reminding us that the more some things change, the more they stay the same.

Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) faces off against Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) in a dramatization of the televised 1973 tennis match that was billed as the Battle of the Sexes, which drew a massive audience of some 90 million viewers and still ranks as one of the most-watched sporting events of all time. In 1970, at the height of the sexual revolution and the women’s movement, iconic tennis champ King and her manager confront the organizer of a tennis tournament offering a women’s prize only one-eighth the amount of the prize for the male winner. The top women tennis players walk out and start their own tour, which struggles at first but eventually establishes itself as the Women’s Tennis Association. King is not only fighting for equality but also secretly struggling with her own attraction to women, cheating on her husband in a romantic affair with her hairdresser. By 1973 aging former champ Bobby Riggs, a serial hustler and self-promoter, is drowning in gambling debt and looking for a scheme. He challenges the new women’s champ Margaret Court to a match and beats her, then challenges the even more famous King, setting up the big match.
