The Fire Inside (2024, rated PG-13) tells the inspirational true story of boxer Claressa Shields, who won gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, eventually winning more world championships and holding more titles than any female boxer before.
Born in Flint, Michigan in 1995, Claressa (Ryan Destiny) gets interested in boxing at age 9 when her father Bo returns from a prison stint and tells her about the boxer Laila Ali. But Bo believes boxing is for men only and won’t let her train. Inspired by her grandmother’s refusal to accept gender restrictions, Claressa commits to the sport, and begins working with tough-love coach Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry). In high school she starts winning regional titles and qualifies for the Olympic Trials, where she defeats the reigning US champ. It looks like she’s on her way to the Games, but a last-minute change to the qualifying rules puts her ascendancy in doubt. Even as her successes mount, Claressa has to reckon with the fact that not all dreams are created equal, and the real fight has just begun.
