An iconic summer blockbuster, Independence Day (1996, rated PG-13) pits interplanetary visitors intent on total annihilation against a scrappy band of wisecracking mavericks that are Earth’s last hope. As the American summer holiday approaches, strange and menacing phenomena darken the skies around the globe. Do these gigantic extraterrestrial spaceships come in peace? They are here to blast our planet into space dust by the Fourth of July. Our only hope for the ultimate Independence Day is the combined talents of Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Bill Pullman and of course, Will Smith, who must come up with a last-ditch plan to somehow vanquish the alien invaders so we can all get back to backyard barbecuing.
