Description:
Join Dr. Andrea Liss on Zoom for our next Good Trouble Reading Group. We’ll be discussing a selection of poems by acclaimed Jamaican-American poet and essayist June Jordan. From the 1960s onward, Jordan’s work championed civil rights, women’s rights, and sexual freedom, giving voice to her lived experience in a language that was both immediate and accessible. Her poems address bisexuality, racial identity, political oppression, family, and memory. Prolific and widely published, Jordan also taught at Yale and the University of California at Berkeley, where she founded the Poetry for the People program in 1991.
The Good Trouble Reading Group shares books that engage themes of social justice with love and family at their core. Our group leader, Dr. Andrea Liss, a local Echo Park resident, is a Professor Emerita of Visual Culture and Cultural Theory at California State University San Marcos. Her teaching and research focus on artwork, photography, and poetry that connect deeply with historical events and their echoes today in the fight for justice.
