Description:
Director RaMell Ross took a stylistically radical approach to adapting Colson Whitehead’s searing novel of two boys sentenced to a racist Florida reform school in the 1960s, Nickel Boys (2024, rated PG-13). Instead of using voiceover narration to tell us what Elwood and Turner are thinking and feeling, he filmed the movie in first-person perspective. This puts you in the characters’ shoes in a uniquely powerful way. It’s an experimental, immersive narrative with a haunting, hazy visual poetry, anchored throughout with historic film clips from the civil rights movement.
Growing up in Tallahassee, young Elwood seems headed for college and success, until he unknowingly hitches a ride in a stolen car and gets framed for the crime. He's sent to the Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school based on a real and notorious institution in the hinterlands, where he encounters the world-weary Turner. The two Black teens strike up an alliance, Turner sharing tips for survival and Elwood clinging to his optimistic worldview. Despite the crippling racism and trauma of life at the Nickel, Elwood strives to hold onto his humanity, and awakens a new vision for Turner.
