Description:

The presentation explores background and a historical overview of the impact threat posed by asteroids and comets, known as Near Earth Objects (NEO), and describes ways to defend Earth from these cosmic hazards.

We discuss why extensive impact cratering evidence is found on most rocky planets and moons but rarely on Earth. Notable examples of Earth impacts are described, including the Meteor Crater in Arizona and the 1908 Tunguska event in Russia, and a video clip is shown of the asteroid explosion event that occurred over Chelyabinsk, Russia, on 15 February 2013.

To address the response to this challenge, we cover the basics of planetary defense against NEOs, including detection, the decision to act, and deflection of an incoming asteroid. The presenter will demonstrate the detection of a new asteroid with a series of clear-skies nighttime pictures, showing a dot of light moving across a background of fixed stars.
