Join us for Fun Interactive Science Hour (FISH)!
FISH is a project that aims to improve access for all kids to ocean science literacy through hands-on experiments. Four (4) workshops will be hosted at the library, you can participate in all of them or individually.
Workshop 3: Coral Bleaching - Corals are jellyfish like animals that form bicarbonate skeletons that form huge ocean ecosystems called coral reefs and provide homes to many ocean animals. However, rising global temperatures are causing many to bleach and likely die and this is affecting the ecosystem as a whole. Coral bleaching is when a coral loses its symbiosis (relationship) with a photosynthetic phytoplankton that provides the coral food. In this workshop we will learn about the importance of coral reefs, their symbiosis with photosynthetic phytoplankton and what happens when that symbiosis breaks down.
Additional FISH workshops:
- April 27, 2026 Workshop 4: Life Cycles
The FISH workshops are in collaboration with postdoctoral scientists at the University of Southern California and the Neighborhood Science Program at the Los Angeles Public Library.
