Description:
The Los Angeles Public Library in collaboration with Javier Cabral of L.A. Taco is proud to present "Taco Day at the Library!" Join us for an afternoon of taco talk as three amazing taqueros discuss the challenges of running a restaurant in today's economy, how to create food that stands out from the crowd and what the future of tacos might look like in our fine city and beyond.
Speakers include Chuy Cervantes, chef de cuisine of Damian/Ditroit, Fátima Juárez, co-owner of the soon to be opened Komal, the first new molino to produce masa made from Indigenous Mexican corn in Los Angeles and Victor Villa, owner of Villa's Tacos and three time Taco Madness champion. Javier Cabral, Editor-in-Chief of L.A. Taco, will moderate.
There will be taco samples afterward for those attending the program, while supplies last!
This event is free, and while reservations are not required, they are highly encouraged. To reserve your seat, please go to this link. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Chef Chuy Cervantes helped open Damian and Ditroit in 2020 and has been the chef de cuisine ever since, leading his team to win their first ever "Best in Show" trophy at Taco Madness 2024. His cooking is inspired by what he craves, but his seafood tlayuda is one of the most desired dishes in the Arts District, made with queso fresco, thinly shaved zucchini, and blue shrimp.
Chef Fátima Juárez was born in Mexico City, raised in Oaxaca, and arrived in Los Angeles in 2016, where she worked with chef Gilberto Cetina of Chichen Itzá and Holbox fame. In 2023-2024, she and her husband started Komal, which produces masa made from Indigenous Mexican corn sourced directly from farmers. Her shop at Mercado La Paloma complex is primed to be a game changer in L.A.’s Taco Life.
Chef Victor Villa is the owner of Villa's Tacos in Highland Park and now also Grand Central Market! He is the only three-time champion of L.A. Taco’s Taco Madness tournament. From a humble stand on Figueroa Street to one of the only taquerías that is known to have a line to eat, Victor Villa’s journey is the stuff of taquero legends.
Javier Cabral is the editor-in-chief of L.A. Taco, a James Beard Award-winning, member-supported publication that covers city news, cultural criticism, investigative journalism, food guides, and all things taco. His writing has been featured in over a dozen publications, including Food & Wine, Lucky Peach, The Washington Post, Bon Appetit, Imbibe, and Razorcake.
