Description:

In 1933, Diego Rivera created a series of watercolors inspired by the Popol Vuh, an epic narrative that recounts the legends and history of the Quiché Maya people—from their origins to their first contact with the Spanish. Given the story-driven nature of the Popol Vuh, and Rivera’s belief that art should empower working people by helping them understand their own histories, Diego Rivera: Coloring the Stories of the Maya Peoples offers an accessible introduction to the complex world of the Maya. The presentation is enriched with a thoughtfully curated repertoire of songs from Mexico and Central America, performed in Spanish, Mayan, and Nahuatl.
