Description:

Join the LAPL Octavia E. Butler Lab, USC Annenberg Innovation Lab, and NOMMO Cultural Strategies for a transformative Juneteenth celebration rooted in Afrofuturism and community healing. Inspired by Tyree Boyd-Pates’s essay on museum curation as care, this interactive story circle invites participants to bring personal objects, photos, or heirlooms that connect Black history with speculative futures.

In this supportive space, we will practice the tradition of oral exchange, not only by displaying items with self-authored museum labels but also by utilizing the Lab’s studios to produce a "Living Archive." Participants will have the unique opportunity to record high-quality oral histories of their artifacts, ensuring that the voices, emotions, and memories attached to these items are preserved alongside the physical objects as we reimagine liberated futures together.

Participants will receive a copy of the book, We Are Civic Media (Northwestern University Press, 2025), featuring Tyree Boyd-Pates' essay "Museum Curation as Care: Civic Media, Black History, and Communicating Afrofuturist Imaginings."

NOMMO Cultural Strategies is a cultural strategy and narrative architecture studio shaping how art, history, and culture are understood in the public sphere, inclusive of the broader African Diaspora.

The Annenberg Innovation Lab (AnnLab) is a curious, creative, and committed Think & Do Tank helping media and technology to work for humans—not against us.

The Octavia Lab is a do-it-yourself maker space located inside the Los Angeles Public Library's historic Central Library.
