Description:

What do you think happens when you look out at the world? Most people think that when they open their eyes, they see the world as it is. As if your eyes are just passively recording what’s going on around you, like a video camera.

The truth is that your eyes (and your other senses like hearing, smell, touch, and proprioception) are all just gathering information. They send this information to your brain, which then uses it to construct your perception of the world. That is, your experience of the world is more like virtual reality—constructed by a computer called your brain—than actual reality.

Scientist Kyle Stephens will provide several demonstrations of visual illusions that show how our brain actively constructs the world around us.
