Description:

Learn to grow your own food from a balcony to the backyard! Los Angeles has an amazing climate that allows us to grow everything from tropical fruits like bananas and melons to cold-weather crops like beets and Brussels sprouts. It is this amazing year-round growing season that can make producing your food such a fun and rewarding process.

Whether you are a first-time gardener or a seasoned green thumb, join urban farmer and educator Elliott Kuhn for an in-depth presentation on how you can start your own journey from seed to table. Organic gardening basics will be covered, which address soil and site preparation, container gardening, seed starting and other propagation methods, seasonal planting and harvesting, integrated pest management, succession planting for extended harvest, fruit trees and orchard considerations, irrigation, and the importance of pollinators.

Participants will be treated to fresh produce samples and have the ability to take select seeds home to start their own garden projects. A comprehensive resource guide will be provided, which will complement the PowerPoint presentation and discussion.

This LA Made program was made possible with the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
