Preschool Classes

Preschools can arrange for group visits to the Children’s Literature Department at Central Library. A visit can include an early literacy storytime, with stories, songs, fingerplays, and more. Call 213-228-7250 to make a reservation.

Schools & Classes

Elementary schools and other groups are invited to make appointments to visit Central Library's Children's Literature Department on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:15 a.m. or 11:15 a.m.

A typical visit includes a 30-minute docent tour of Central Library and a 30-minute program in the Children's Literature Department. The library program will be tailored to the grade level of the students, and may include:

  • Storytime
  • An introduction to library resources
  • A lesson on library research with print and online materials

Following the program, students are free to browse for books and check out materials. Checking out materials may add an additional 45 minutes to the visit.

For classes to receive library cards and check out materials on the day of the visit, library card applications must be received by the library a minimum of 3 weeks before the visit.

To make an appointment for the docent tour and program, leave a message at 213-228-7168. If possible, please provide two phone numbers, an email address, and any details or requests you have for your visit. Our coordinator will contact you to confirm.
