王谷晶の小説 (ババヤガの夜)（2020 年刊行）が、このたび英国推理作家協会主催のダガー賞を受賞しました。本作は、ロサンゼルス・タイムズの2024年度「この夏読むべきミステリー5選」にも選出され、その面白さは世界中で高く評価されています.

物語は、主人公・新道依子がひょんなことから暴力団の会長の一人娘のボディーガードを務めるところから始まります。暴力が渦巻く危険な日常のなか、依子は飄々と、時には暴力には暴力で対抗しながら生き抜いていきます。この作品の大きな魅力は、「女性はこうあるべき」という日本社会に根付いた固定観念を、痛快に笑い飛ばし、力強く打ち砕いていく点です.

Akira Otani's novel, Baba Yaga's Night (published in 2020), has won the prestigious Dagger Award presented by the Crime Writers' Association. The novel was also named one of the "5 Mysteries to Read This Summer" by the Los Angeles Times in 2024, a testament to its widespread acclaim.

The story begins when the protagonist, Yoriko Shindo, is hired by chance to be the bodyguard for the daughter of a yakuza boss. She navigates a dangerous world of constant violence, living life with a cool detachment and, at times, meeting force with equal force. A key appeal of the work is how it powerfully and exhilaratingly shatters and laughs at the fixed social stereotypes rooted in Japanese society, such as "women should be thin," "beautiful," or "demure."

Yoriko is neither conventionally "beautiful" nor "slim." Instead, she is incredibly strong, tough, and full of a wild, untamed spirit. Despite its relentless violence, the story pulls you in with a stunning sense of speed. The vivid writing creates an immersive experience that feels like watching a movie or a graphic novel, leaving the reader with a strange sense of exhilaration.

Her extensive experience from a childhood surrounded by books and her time as a recluse consuming countless films and novels during a period of depression are strongly reflected in the novel.
