Description:
For all its myth and legend, Hollywood is a real place, filled with the lives and dreams of real people. The Hollywood Photograph Archive tells the story of this remarkable place through more than 12,000 images spanning over a century. Built from diverse sources, the archive was born from the families of Hollywood pioneers C. E. Toberman and Ernest Torrence. This treasure trove recently changed hands to another Hollywood family. Christy McAvoy—preservation pioneer, longtime Photo Friends supporter, and one of the archive’s new stewards—will share some of her favorite images from the collection, as well as its journey through the years and back home to Hollywood.
Christy Johnson McAvoy is a Los Angeles native with a passion for history, photography, and preservation. She has been at the forefront of historic preservation since the 1970s, when she co-founded Hollywood Heritage. She has worked tirelessly ever since to advance all aspects of preservation at the local, state, and national levels. As founding principal of Historic Resources Group, she has helped preserve places throughout California, including such Hollywood landmarks as Grauman’s Chinese and Egyptian Theatres, Paramount Studios, and the Wattles Estate and Gardens. Her family recently became stewards of the Hollywood Photograph Archive, more than 12,000 images capturing the area’s development over more than a century. She continues to champion the heritage and built environment of Hollywood, her “first love.”
