Film Screening: Spirit of '76

About the Event

The semiquincentennial is here, so it's time to get back to the The Spirit of ‘76 (1990, rated PG-13), Lucas Reiner’s righteous romp through a once and future America, starring David Cassidy, Leif Garrett, Olivia D’Abo, the members of Devo, and Jeff and Steve McDonald from L.A.’s own Redd Kross. In the year 2176, a magnetic storm destroys all records of historical documents. Three intrepid patriots are sent back in time to the year 1776 to retrieve copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution – but a time machine snafu lands them in 1976 by mistake. With the help of some friendly dirt bike-riding teens, they don period garb (tight bell bottoms and loud polyester shirts), visit EST sessions and head shops, learn to disco dance, try Pop Rocks and go for a spin in a Pacer. Can they foil space cadets, foxy mamas and bad vibes to repair their time machine and return to the future with the founding documents? Roman Coppola co-wrote the script and a teenage Sofia Coppola did the dynamite costuming.
