Film Screening: Jaws 3
About the Event
As Karl Marx observed, history (Jaws) repeats itself, first as tragedy (Jaws 2), then as farce – Jaws 3 (1983, rated PG). Dennis Quaid plays Mike Brody, son of the Amity Island police chief, now running SeaWorld Orlando. The park is full of underwater tunnels through which visitors can observe marine life swimming by – which is how a murderous great white shark sneaks onto the premises, after one of the gates connecting the park to the ocean fails to close. Soon dolphins, waterskiers, and staff are getting mauled. When Brody and his team investigate, they find a small great white, which they decide to tame and turn into a SeaWorld attraction; unfortunately, the real killer is mama shark, who’s still out there lusting for blood. Roy Scheider was determined not to star in this one: "Mephistopheles couldn't talk me into doing it… they knew better than to even ask me.” It was originally released in theaters in a 3D version during a craze for that format, along with Amityville 3D and Friday the 13th Part III, with the tagline “the third dimension is terror.” Apologies to 3D fans, this screening will be in regular old 2D.
