La Biblioteca Central, sede principal de la Biblioteca Pública de Los Ángeles, cuenta con 72 sucursales. Es la tercera biblioteca central más grande del país y sus departamentos temáticos albergan más de 2,8 millones de libros, 5000 suscripciones a revistas, más de 3 millones de fotografías, 10 millones de patentes estadounidenses con acceso digital, además de materiales multimedia y de aprendizaje de idiomas. La Biblioteca Central dispone de nueve departamentos temáticos que ofrecen diversos servicios de referencia presenciales, telefónicos, postales, por correo electrónico o por chat. Los usuarios pueden solicitar materiales desde cualquier punto de la ciudad y recibirlos en su sucursal local.

Descripción general del edificio de la Biblioteca Central

La histórica Biblioteca Central abrió sus puertas en 1926 con gran éxito y ha recibido a angelinos y visitantes durante casi un siglo. Considerada una joya arquitectónica , el edificio es famoso por elementos emblemáticos como la pirámide de azulejos en el tejado, la vasta rotonda decorada con murales y su ala más moderna, el Atrio, inaugurada en 1993.

El edificio cuenta con 538,000 pies cuadrados de espacio distribuidos en ocho plantas, casi 89 millas de estanterías y asientos para más de 1,400 personas. Hay 255 computadoras de acceso público gratuito ubicadas en el Centro de Computación y en todo el edificio. También se ofrece acceso a internet mediante Wi-Fi. La escuela secundaria LAUSD Downtown Magnets utiliza la Biblioteca Central como aula.
