Creators in Residence: Past Creators

Fashion designer and entrepreneur, Ashley Walker, has created a new fashion line that embodies the city’s past, inspired by materials from the Library’s historical archives of documents, manuscripts, and photographs.

Food writer, Tien Nguyen, has explored and expanded on the Library’s renowned menu collection, highlighting both iconic restaurants and those that have been lost over time, and uncovering the histories of the people and communities behind them.

Live experience designer and director, Andy Crocker, created six experience kits and two audio pieces inspired by the Library’s 72 branches and infinite stories.

Graphic novelist, game designer, and installation artist Shing Yin Khor Creator Shing Yin Khor created four mixed media maps on wood, and one marionette, inspired by the Los Angeles Public Library’s collections, staff, and resources.
 

Photographer Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin created a suite of highly perceptive photographs highlighting library locations with personal significance to him. These sets of photographs document details and moments from the immediate surrounding community each library serves.

Interdisciplinary visual artist, River Garza, created large mixed-media paintings representing libraries. The detailed collages incorporate library ephemera such as bookplates, Tongva words, and native plants from the region. His work prompts us to consider the complex histories and interrelated nature of all our public spaces in the city, while asserting the ongoing importance of honoring Indigenous voices.
