Description:

Aiming to honor Octavia Butler's legacy at the Central Library, a place she cherished. The celebration will include a scholarly panel discussion, tabletop roleplaying campaign, and a hands-on activity with community partner LA Commons in the Octavia Lab. Patrons who RSVP for any of the event's programs will be eligible for a book giveaway: Chi-ming Yang: Author of Octavia E. Butler H is for Horse.


Visions of the Present: A Panel Discussion

Time: 10:10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Location: Taper Auditorium

  • A panel of scholars of Octavia E. Butler will discuss the meaning of her work, with an emphasis on Parable of the Talents.
    Tyree Boyd-Pates, an impactful author, historian, curator, writer, DJ, social entrepreneur, and international speaker.. He explores Black culture through a contemporary lens and actively mobilizes communities of color using journalism, social media, education, and historical advocacy.
    Ashley Blakeney, an arts healing facilitator and cultural leader with more than a decade of experience working in arts organizations and education. As the Executive Director at the Crenshaw Dairy Mart, Blakeney works to help communities of color imagine new systems for a more equitable world.
    Moderated by: Schessa Garbutt, designer, artist, writer, and near-futurist. They are the founder and creative director of Firebrand Creative House, a branding and design agency for changemakers.

Return to Earthseed: A Tabletop Roleplay Campaign in Octavia E. Butler's Parable Universe

  • Created by Angeleno game masters, this interactive role-playing adventure inhabits the world of Octavia Butler’s Parable series—a world afflicted by similar social, political, and environmental challenges we face. This gaming space allows players to co-create their understanding of the hope, creativity, and resilience that shaped Octavia’s novel, Parable of the Talents, while the openness of tabletop gaming allows expansion upon characters, creation of new stories, and finding new possibilities.

Voices Amplified: LA Commons Presents Octavia E. Butler Themed Zine Workshop With Aiysha Sinclair

  • Join LA Commons and artist Aiysha Sinclair in a zine-making workshop inspired by the legacy and work of Octavia Butler. Explore themes of race, resilience, and climate as we collage our visions of the past, present, and future!
