Description:
This exuberant Altman-esque ensemble comedy takes a loving look at the members of an upper middle-class Punjabi family in New Delhi frantically preparing for a Monsoon Wedding (2011, rated R).
When young Aditi Verma breaks off her affair with a married TV producer and accepts an arranged marriage to the son of a family friend living in Texas, who the Vermas barely know, their household is thrown into chaos. Relatives start arriving from all over the world in the middle of monsoon season, the parents are stressed, finances are perilous. Love triangles and betrayals are breaking out among the guests, and sordid secrets threaten to derail the celebration – a battle royale of love and anguish which the family must overcome to achieve their happy ending.
It’s a sensual whirl of color and music, a brilliant fusion of Bollywood production and Hollywood storytelling that reaffirms the power of familial love. Bonus for Zohran Mamdani fans: Mira Nair, acclaimed director of this and many other wonderful Indian-American movies since the late 1980s including Salaam Bombay! and Mississippi Masala, is the new NYC mayor’s mother.
