Description:

An unassuming trifle in the Bill Murray renaissance when it came out back in 1993, Groundhog Day (rated PG) has since aged into a universally beloved Zen comedy classic that is often acclaimed as one of the best films of the late 20th century. Writer-director Harold Ramis’ message of transcending the despair of the eternal return transformed a goofy February holiday of rodent weather prediction into a cultural signifier for the problem of existence. On a less philosophical level, it’s a great ‘90s rom-com with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

Terminally jaded Pittsburgh weatherman Phil Connors travels to Punxsutawney with his cute producer Rita and crew to cover the famous local groundhog’s annual prediction as to how long winter will last. He wakes up in his hotel room on February 2nd to Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” playing on the clock radio, grumps at all the locals, phones in a halfhearted groundhog segment, and then gets snowed in and is forced to spend an extra night in town. When he wakes up the next morning, “I Got You Babe” is playing and it’s February 2nd, and he has to live it all over again. He’s trapped in a time loop where every day is Groundhog Day, and no amount of incredulity, dissipation, prayer, self-harm, penitence, bad behavior or good behavior can get him out of it. Also, he’s falling in love with Rita, but she can only remember him as the same old cynical jerk every morning, no matter how devotedly he woos her during the day. Can Phil somehow escape his own personal Groundhog Day and find a new day with Rita?

(We’re showing it on February 3rd and not the 2nd, but that kind of works with the theme if you think about it…)
