The Stranger (1942) by Albert Camus is a foundational existentialist/absurdist novella that explores human isolation, the search for meaning, and society's violent rejection of those who refuse to play by its emotional rules. Set in colonial Algiers, it follows Meursault, a man whose absolute honesty and emotional detachment lead him to a senseless murder and a date with the guillotine.
