About the Event

A sheltered naif stumbles into accidental success in Being There (1979, rated PG), centered around a memorably low-key performance by Peter Sellers. Chance is a simple-minded gardener who has spent his entire life in the Washington D.C. townhouse of his wealthy employer, getting all his information about the world from his small television set. When his patron suddenly dies, Chance is forced to vacate the home and wander the streets. There he encounters a business mogul, who takes Chance for a fellow upper-class gentleman. Soon Chance is ushered into high society, where his placid gardening tips and thoughtfully intoned TV commercial slogans are mistaken for spiritual wisdom, making him the talk of the town. One of Hal Ashby’s brilliant run of 1970s character-driven dramedies along with Harold and Maude, Shampoo and The Last Detail.
