Sci Fi Story Club: Laser Eyes Ain’t Everything by Effie Seibert + Missing Helen by Tia Tashiro

About the Event

Join us for the next gathering of the Sci Fi Story Club. We’ll be discussing two stories from this year’s list of Hugo Award nominees: Laser Eyes Ain’t Everything by Effie Seibert and Missing Helen by Tia Tashiro.

Seiberg’s satirical story of future disability activism follows a wheelchair-using protagonist who can shoot laser beams from their eyes – but still can’t get the city to improve accessibility for the mobility-challenged or build more traffic circles, forcing them to resort to outside-the-box tactics. In Tashiro’s near-future scenario, young women needing extra money no longer sell their eggs for IVF, they sell clones of themselves. Helen sold her clone for cash back in her early 20s, then years later married Mark; when their marriage breaks up, Mark moves on to a new romantic interest whose identity hits a little too close to home.

Email eden@lapl.org for the reading selection and for the Zoom link to attend, and to get on the mailing list for this monthly gathering.

For disability-related accommodations, please call (213) 228-7430 at least five business days prior to the event.
