Review:

Powerless by Lauren Roberts presents a fantastical narrative set in the kingdom of Ilya, where characters are either magical Elites or powerless Ordinary People. Paedyn Gray exists as an Ordinary person who pretends to have magical abilities for her survival. Her situation becomes intriguing when she rescues Prince Kai and finds herself forced to participate in the Trials, a contest designed for the most powerful Elites.

Paedyn must depend on her intelligence to survive while maintaining the secrecy of her non-existent powers. Paedyn finds it difficult to conceal her true identity while attempting to belong in a society that marginalizes individuals like her. A significant narrative element involves the concealed romance between Paedyn and Prince Kai. Initially filled with mutual distrust, their relationship evolves into understanding as they get to know each other. The transformation from enemies to lovers injects dramatic tension, which enhances the story's excitement.

Powerless was a fascinating and enjoyable read. I appreciated Paedyn's reliance on intellect over magical powers and was also engaged in her secret romance. I recommend this book for those who enjoy fantasy elements combined with romance and empowered female protagonists.
