In a post-apocalyptic United States known as Panem, every year the population is forced to participate in the Hunger Games. Two children from each of the twelve city-states are sent to the Capitol where they are put into an arena to fight to the death. There is only one winner. So when Katniss volunteers herself, in order to save her twelve-year-old sister from this fate, she doesn't expect to come home ever again. It's a deadly version of Survivor, where you do not get voted off the island, you get killed.
