World AIDS Day

Rudy Ruiz, Librarian, Digitization & Special Collections,
Red ribbon and text that reads World AIDS Day

December 1st is World AIDS Day. Today is dedicated to raising awareness of HIV and AIDS, to support those living with HIV or AIDS and to commemorate those who have died.

A book list of titles that cover HIV/AIDS follows shortly. However, I would first like to acknowledge the hard work of several Los Angeles Public Library staff members and an extraordinary library ally, Linda Torn. On October 15, 2017, this fine group commenced in Grand Park to take part in the 2017 AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The months leading up to the walk saw these selfless folks spend their free time fundraising to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic and support people affected by the disease. Together the team raised $4,321!

In July of 1985, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) held the first ever AIDS Walk event. The 1985 event raised $673,000 surpassing the $100,000 organizers had expected to raise. In total, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has raised over $80 million to combat HIV and AIDS.

Thanks to you fantastic people!
