Music For Your Next Road Trip

Summer is in full swing and I know I like to visit friends and family during this time of year by taking long road trips up and down the California coast. I enjoy the drive, and what I especially enjoy is having plenty of time to listen to some of my favorite music. In fact, with Freegal, I have created my own Summer On The Road streaming music playlist which I plan to use on my next road trip to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Freegal is a free and legal music service available from the Los Angeles Public Library. You can download up to 5 songs per week, the count resets every Monday, and they are yours to keep! You never have to return the songs you download through Freegal. Plus, Los Angeles Public Library cardholders can also stream music for an unlimited amount of time—that's right, entirely without restriction.

Best of all, Freegal lets you build playlists of your favorite songs. You can create a playlist with Freegal, on the site or on the app, like this:

  • Log into the Freegal site or app with your library card and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number)

  • Navigate to My Music and press the Playlists tab at the top.

  • On the mobile app, press the button called Create a Playlist.

  • On the website, press the circle with a + sign next to My Playlists.

  • A menu will appear. Select either My Download Playlists or My Streaming Playlists. Next, name your playlist and press Create.

  • To add music to a Streaming Playlist, navigate to a song in the Home, Browse or Search section and press the button with 3 dots next to the song and press Add to Streaming Playlist.

  • Press the name of your desired playlist and it will be added.

  • To add music to a Download Playlist, first, you must have downloaded a song. Your downloaded music can be found in the Songs tab within My Music. Navigate there and press the button with 3 dots next to the song and press Add to Download Playlist. Press the name of your desired playlist and it will be added.

Freegal features a list of ready-made curated playlists, and you can also access the Los Angeles Public Library playlists on the Freegal site and app—these are playlists created by library cardholders. You can share your own playlists like this:

  • Navigate to My Music and press the Playlists tab at the top.

  • Mobile: On the mobile app, press the button with 3 dots next to the playlist to view the menu options. Press the Share with Library option

  • Website: On the website, you can hover over your playlist to see the menu button (3 stacked dots) and press Share to Library, you can also click your playlist to view its detail page and press the gear icon to view the same menu options.

If you would like to tap into some great Summer road trip tunes already made for you, here are a few recommended playlists below. These were specifically curated by Freegal for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
