Summer vacation is almost over, and it will soon be time to go back to school. Did you enjoy the Summer Reading Challenge? Did you complete it? For me, reading lots of fun books, and having lots of fun experiences, makes for a nice summer, don't you agree?

This month's theme is Travel & Manga, and I'd like to introduce you to some manga that can accompany you in your journey through life.

First is Bride's Story, by Kaoru Mori. The manga is set in Central Asia in the 19th century. It starts with the marriage of a 20-year old bride named Amir who is married to a 12-year-old nomad named Cal-kuku. It is a story of two people who meet each other for the first time at their wedding ceremony and grow together as time goes on. You can also enjoy the author's very detailed drawings of the rare foods that are well-known in Central Asia.

Next, I will introduce Girls' Last Tour by Tsukumizu. The story follows two girls, Chito and Yuri, wandering around the world on a ride called the Kettenkrat. The contrast between the cute girls and a world in ruins makes for a very interesting read.

The last manga I would like to introduce is Laid Back Camp by Afro. This manga is about high school students who go camping together. Through their time camping together, they learn about themselves, and each other. This heart-warming story will have readers melting in their seats, and searching for campsites.

I’d also like to share with you three manga titles which haven't been translated into English yet. [The Japanese titles can be found at the Little Tokyo Branch Library]. Fushigino Kunino Bird is a work by Taiga Sasa. It is about a British adventure Bird that traveled to Japan with an interpreter named Ito in the early Meiji-period. This manga is a true story, which is based on Isabella Bird’s Japan diary. Japan has changed since Isabella’s century-old diary. I’m amazed by the brightness and simplicity of the Japanese people of the diary’s era. It is a must-read.

The next manga is Uchuyorimo Toi Basyo by Meme Yoimachi. It is a manga from a popular animation. This is a story about four high school girls’ journey to the South Pole. After seeing the animation, the manga is much more enjoyable because the manga promotes a more detailed experience.

Lastly, we have Blue Giants Supreme produced by Shinichi Ishizuka. It is a sequel to Blue Giant, the overseas edition. It is about a hero who discovered the tenor sax during high school and he decided to become the best saxophone player in the world. The hero’s journey started from Sendai to Tokyo, then to Europe and Germany. You can really hear music in this manga which is a special experience.

Let’s enjoy reading manga!
