¡Despierta, greñuda!

Patricia Valdovinos, Librarian, Multilingual Collections,
a very sleepy bugs bunny getting out of bed

Tengo tres alarmas para despertarme. ¡Tres!

Wake up, Crazy Haired Girl

I have three alarms to wake up. Three!

The first one is for the time I should wake up so I have enough time to make myself breakfast, get ready, and take it easy. The second one is in case I sleep in, intentionally or unintentionally, where I will most likely have to get ready in a hurry and take my breakfast to go. This alarm also decides if I am going to sleep in more and won’t take something in for lunch. Now the third one. The third one my friends is the one where I will wear no makeup and will put my hair in any style (or no style) that is reasonable for work. This definitely means breakfast to go while I throw anything I have for lunch in my lunchpail, or decide I will break down and buy something.

Alarm three is definitely the most common one with me, not only now, but ever since I was little. That's why my mother, but mostly my grandmother, would say: “¡Ay, greñuda! Porque no te peinaste.” And of course, my response would always be: “Pero si me peine Abuelita.” Although I would have my hair in some form of a ponytail or in a bun, to them it was never combed enough, especially when I would have it down.

The older I get the more I embrace the term greñuda and I even tell myself right when I jump out of bed that today will be a messy hair bun day aka voy estar greñuda hoy.

My grandmother hated it, and maybe it was an act of rebellion from these patriarchal standards that still cloud our society today, but sometimes my greñas just want to be free.

Thus, I made a playlist featuring all my favorite songs that make me proud to be a greñuda on Friday mornings.

*my poor Abuelita is probably rolling her eyes at me right now*

And remember you can make your very own Freegal Music playlists with your library card featuring all your favorite morning songs.
