Two years ago, bestselling author and illustrator Mo Willems, accepted the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video for That Is NOT a Good Idea, an animated adaptation of the picture book story where a hungry fox meets a good-natured goose…but all is not what it seems.
Willems talked about how these short films were great for reluctant readers. Having a fun screen experience and learning that the source material is a book can be enlightening and can even inspire children to experiment with other ways they can either adapt a story or tell their own.
Bookflix houses hundreds of these movies and pairs them with read-along informational books. Children from preschool age to grade 3 enjoy learning about: Animals and Nature, Earth and Sky, People and Places, ABC’s and 1, 2, 3’s, Family and Community, Music and Rhyme, Adventure, Celebrations, and Imagination.
As a librarian, I’ve incorporated Bookflix into some of my programs to make the experience more interactive. Just try watching the luminous, Me...Jane without the desire to talk about it afterwards or wanting to learn more. Bookflix truly supports further exploration about topics that kids love!
