The 2016 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award nominations were announced Tuesday, April 19th! The Eisner Awards, given out every year at the popular San Diego Comic-Con International, are widely considered the “Academy Awards” of the comic book and graphic novel industry. To just be nominated, let alone win, is an honor. It’s no surprise, then, that writers, artists, colorists, inkers, and letterers anxiously wait for the nominations to be announced, covering everything from Best Continuing Series and Best Publication for Early Readers (up to age 8) to Best Reality-Based Work, Best Academic/Scholarly Work, and more.

This year’s Eisner Awards honor some of my current favorite comic book series and standalone graphic novel titles: “Giant Days” (by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin), “Nimona” (by Noelle Stevenson of “Lumberjanes” fame), “Step Aside, Pops!: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection” (by the witty Kate Beaton), “Ms. Marvel” (by G. Willow Wilson), and “A Bride’s Story” (by Kaoru Mori). Whether it’s navigating the ups and downs of college, convincing your favorite super-villain to let you be his sidekick, or figuring out how to be a superhero and a normal Muslim teenager at the same time, these comics have a little bit of everything!

All of these titles, and more from the list of nominees, are available through your Los Angeles Public Library, whether it’s a physical copy sitting on a bookshelf or a digital copy available through our eMedia resources like Hoopla Digital and OverDrive. Visit your local branch and ask your librarians for some great comic book and graphic novel recommendations that may not have ended up on the Eisner nominee list!
