Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We'll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material -- e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film -- but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1926, Alison Lurie was born. Her novels frequently focus on adultery and other romantic complications in the lives of artists and academics. She has also written a memoir, and non-fiction books about children's literature and the symbolism of fashion. Her 1984 Foreign Affairs was awarded the Pulitzer Prize; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |

On this day in 1932, Eileen Brennan was born. She would become best known for playing brash, tough women with hearts of gold, as in the movie (and later TV series) Private Benjamin. Her first big break, though, was as a musical theater star, in the off-Broadway show Little Mary Sunshine, an affectionate parody of old-fashioned operetta. The cast recording of Little Mary Sunshine is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1953, Jean-Pierre Jeunet was born. His early films Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children, co-directed with Marc Caro, were dark, surrealist fantasies. As a solo director, his movies have tended to be more romantic; Amélie was an offbeat love story, and A Very Long Engagement is a straightforward romantic drama about a woman searching for her lover after World War I. A Very Long Engagement is available for streaming at OverDrive. |
