On this day in 1904, Greer Garson was born. The actress was one of Hollywood's biggest stars in the 1940s, and holds two records in the trivia of the Academy Awards. Her acceptance speech when she won the Oscar for Mrs. Miniver is the longest on record; Garson spoke for more than five minutes, and the Academy imposed time limits beginning the next year. And Garson is the only actor to be Oscar-nominated five years in a row. Garson stars with Laurence Olivier in the 1940 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which is available for streaming at OverDrive. |

On this day in 1935, Jerry Lee Lewis was born. The rockabilly pioneer started his career with a remarkable year, releasing both "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" and "Great Balls of Fire" in 1957. In 1958, the 22-year-old Lewis married his 13-year-old cousin, and the resulting scandal derailed his career. It would be a decade before Lewis made a comeback, this time as a country singer, and he would continue to have country hits into the early 1980s. Great Balls of Fire collects the best of Lewis' early rockabilly; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1942, Jean-Luc Ponty was born. A violin prodigy, Ponty was a member of a symphony orchestra in Paris while still in his teens; he was also playing saxophone and clarinet in jazz clubs. He would eventually combine the two worlds and become famous as a jazz violinist. Ponty's use of electronic techniques often made his violin sound like a synthesizer, and in the '90s, he developed an interest in fusing his jazz-pop with traditional African music and rhythms. Several of Ponty's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla. |
